A stunning knife, probably dating from the 1980's(?) and Handmade by one of the craftsmen at Sakai. Whoever it was certainly knows how to make a knife, as the quality is on a par with some of the better Custom Makers - and better than most. Featuring a hand rubbed finish on the  blade (there is a bright spot on one side of the choil) and lovely Sambar stag, with brass liners and n/silver bolsters. The 'fit & finish' is excellent and the mid-lock locks the knife like a bank vault. Blade: 3 inches. Closed: 4-1/2 inches. No box or sheath.

An earlier example by Stuart Snr. as denoted by his engraved logo, this would suit a Stalker who prefers a longer blade or simply become a very useful knife to have around a camp. Made from their renowned 'high carbon stainless steel' with a brass guard and pins complimenting the Cocobolo Rosewood handle. Blade: 5 inches. Oal: 10 inches. Complete with original hand tooled leather sheath.

These Sets are very much appreciated by stalkers, having 2 knives that will pretty much handle everything needed to process game. Being an accomplished stalker himself, Alan certainly knows what is required. This particular Set was originally sold by me - and is still one of the nicest Sets I have seen. The matching handles are Antique Ivory 'micarta' with red liners and the steel on the larger knife (Stalker) is 12c27 while the Ripper is made from 14c28N. All fittings are s/steel. Stalker: Blade 4-1/4 inches. Oal: 9 inches. Ripper: Blade 2-1/2 inches. Oal: 6-1/2 inches. Another attraction of this Set is the particularly thick Cowhide leather, which is no longer available from Alan's leather supplier.

ALAN WOOD. "MINI HUNTER".

Another example of Alan's Classic knife, now reproduced by Casstrom as the 'Safari'. This is an older knife which has lived life as a 'Drawer Queen' and as such, the micarta handle shows a little 'ageing patina' on one side where it has been exposed to the light, and the  original sheath shows light handling marks. This knife is made in 12c27 s/steel, with nickel silver fittings, and is just waiting for someone to take it out and use it. (why settle for a copy when you can have the original ! )

A lovely knife from one of the UK's pioneer knife makers. This is a very ergonomic knife for those who don't require a large knife to dress game, or a knife for those who have a fondness for the smaller species. Hand forged (carbon steel), it shows one or two 'speckles' of tarnish but overall is in excellent condition. Handled in Red Deer antler secured with brass pins (and no doubt a high strength epoxy as well !). Blade: 2-1/4 inches. Oal: 6-1/8 inches. Complete with a very well made leather sheath.

As a knife that was part of a collection I recently bought, I have to confess that I know very little about this maker - other than he certainly knows how to craft a knife ! Hafted in Wild Boar tusk and with stunning deep engraved scroll work on both sides of the blade, this knife is very European in flavour but epitomizes 'Pride of Ownership'. The s/steel guard is very well fitted and if this knife does not sell, I could well be tempted to keep it for my own use. Complete with original 'deep seated' brown leather pouch sheath. R.O.EASLER. USA. (Deceased). "LOVELESS Style DROP POINT".

A very well respected and reknowned Maker, who was a member of the Knifemaker's Guild, so you know the standard of his work is going to be high. This particular model appears to be based of Bob's (Loveless) classic Dropped Hunter, although with a shorter blade and, as such, is more idealy suited to this 'side of the pond' where the species tend to be smaller. The steel is stainless with a s/steel guard and fittings, and a dark wood handle (which has a very small crack near the thong hole) on maroon liners. Blade: 3-1/2 inches. Oal: 8-1/2 inches.

This knife has been used - and that shows on the blade - but still has many years of life left in it. Complete with original sheath, also made by Russell. Good condition. £195 inc. UK p&p.

GIL HIBBEN KNIVES. "A.P.H.A. SEMI-SKINNER.

A now discontinued model bearing the logo of the Alaska Professional Hunters Association, this is an extremely well made knife for those who like a semi-skinner with a slightly deeper belly. Well suited to the larger species. S/steel blade and guard (which is well fitted) and a comfortable black micarta handle, with red liners. Blade: 4-1/2 inches. Oal: 9 inches.

Complete with a black leather sheath with button snap. This knife was made in Taiwan, unlike the current examples which are made in China.

A brand new model from Alan ! His variation of the classic Grohmann/D.H.Russell Belt Knife, this combines the handle shape with a  'semi-skinner' blade (as opposed to the leaf shape of the original) that raises the point and give more belly for skinning. The steel is 12c27, with a brushed finish and the handle is nicely figured Spalted Beech with red liners. Fittings are bronze with a central mosaic pin. Blade: 3-1/2 inches. Oal: 8-1/2 inches. GERBER LEGENDARY BLADES. USA. "Model A475 -ARMORHIDE SERIES".

Released from my own collection, this particular knife was obviously part of the equipment taken on an African Safari by USA Gunmakers, Thompson Centre in 1976. Discontinued in the late 1980's, these Armourhide knives (which refers to the handle covering - a Gerber speciality) won rave reviews in use due to their use of 'High Speed Tool Steel' blades at Rc. 60-62, with an industrial hard-chrome plating. Made when Pete Gerber was still running the firm and designed by the legendary Al Mar when he was head designer for Gerber, before setting up making knives in his own name. Blade: 4-1/2" (2.25mm thick). Oal: 9-1/2". Complete with original brown leather sheath.

Described in their catalogue as  - "A rugged compact knife for hunting and field use, it will prove itself invaluable for all sportsmen".

Since the demise of Pat Mitchell Knives due to the passing of both Stuart Snr. (who actually made the knives) and his wife, Pat (who ran the business and whom it was named after) these knives have become sought after by Collectors and also those looking for a very good quality Handmade Sheffield knife - as opposed to one made in the Far East !

These knives keep a superb edge due to the SF77 high carbon stainless steel used by Stuart Snr. This particular knife is handled in a very attractive wood laminate, which was one of the handle options offered, and a brass guard and pins. The original sheath is missing but the knife comes with a high quality sheath similar to the original style. This is, without doubt, the best quality Pat Mitchell knife I have seen since their passing and whoever buys this will not be disappointed !
