NEW MAKERS

My proposals are to promote the work of up and coming new makers,

both here in the UK and abroad, whose work is already at a certain level and with the potential to improve further still.

TOM WELDON. UK

Tom is actually a very good, long standing customer of mine, with an eye for the very best quality knives. However this year (2018), due to the twists and turns that Fate brings to our lives, Tom told me he had made the decision to become a full time Knifemaker. I wished him well and looked forward to seeing him progress over time to a standard where his knives would become acceptable and saleable.

He then came along to my table at this year's KnivesUK to show me three Bushcraft knives he had made. WOW !! My two customers either side of him, looking at his knives, immediately bought one each off him, leaving him and me both a little stunned - but not surprised considering the high quality of his work. For someone who has been making knives for less than 12 months, he is producing work comparable with someone who has been making for years !

Tom has already acquired a contract with a Top Gunmaker to supply them with an exclusive designed knife and I know we are going to here a lot more about Tom in the coming years.

Like Paul Mason, who has gone on to be a Top UK Maker, we have another truly exceptional talent to treasure.

PAUL MASON. UK

I first met Paul, some years ago, when I had a table at the Midland Game Fair and was approached by Paul who showed me examples of his work, asking for my opinion. At that time he explained that he had only made around 5-6 folders to date and yet they showed the workmanship and skill of a maker with far more experience. To say I was impressed is an understatement !

This is a maker with a great future who, like myself, shares a love of "slipjoint" folders and fills a void in the UK as someone with the potential to make this type of folder to an extremely high standard. These knives are truly exceptional considering Paul has only just started his knifemaking journey.

Paul is now firmly established as the UK's premier maker of Slipjoints and now has a lot of demand for his work. As such, I am no longer able to offer his work for sale ( much to my regret ) - although I was proud and pleased, for a short time, to be the Dealer for his knives.

ANDY MARTLAND. UK

It is with some sadness that I write Andy has told me he will no longer be making knives. He will be missed on the Knifemaking scene but I wish him well and hope he might reconsider at some point in the future.

I first met Andy at a show I was exhibiting at and was immediately impressed with his work and genuine desire to offer a superior knife.

His attention to detail and overall first-rate workmanship made it very easy for me to agree to become a dealer for his knives.

I am so impressed with Andy's work that I have asked him to make the CKHunter

I will reply as soon as possible and, as always, strive to offer a professional service.

So sad to hear that Knifemaking Legend TONY BOSE passed away yesterday.

The word legend is often used but in Tony's case it was entirely justified. More than anyone, he rekindled interest in the 'slipjoint' genre and was generous with his time and knowledge to other makers of this type of folder, including his work with W.R. Case.

I am proud to say I knew him and met him and the Knifemaking World will be a lesser place without him.

RIP
